The truth about USAID: Lies & misinformation destroying the America that helps.

Around the world, as you read this, millions of people are suffering without the necessary aid they have become used to. Adults and children are starving. Villages are wondering where their next meals will come from. Medicines are becoming in short supply. Despots are returning to old ways of stealing what they can for sale on the black market.

And behind it all, the flag of the United States, that used to fly proud and tall, is now little more than a tattered reminder of how this country used to lead in times, and in places, of difficulty,

Let’s not mince words.

Let’s talk about the insulting nonsense that has been spewed about USAID (the U.S. Agency for International Development), and why it’s not just misinformation—it’s outright insulting and damaging.

For years, USAID has been one of the most effective arms of U.S. foreign policy, doing everything from eradicating disease to rebuilding war-torn nations, and yet the right-wing echo chamber insists on demonizing it. Why? Well, because nothing terrifies a Republican, specifically the MAGA faction, more than the thought of talking about anything they can’t understand. If they can’t explain it in mono-syllabic words and phrases, it must be a conspiracy.

This paranoia, fueled by an unrelenting hatred for anything progressive, has now spilled into a full-on assault on USAID’s mission, with ridiculous claims and unfounded accusations being peddled by the likes of Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and their loyal band of keyboard warriors.

First of all, let’s just rip apart the utterly laughable lie that USAID is somehow funding “gender programs” that are aimed at destroying America. USAID has worked tirelessly to advance health, education, and gender equality across the globe, particularly in regions where basic rights are often inaccessible to women and marginalized communities. For example, USAID has been instrumental in fighting HIV/AIDS and promoting sexual health education in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the pandemic has been devastating. But to MAGA, this is nothing short of a conspiracy to "corrupt" the youth of America.

Saving lives on the other side of the world is a conspiracy to impact Americans. Just let that sink in.

Then we have the grand misinformation campaign perpetuated by people like Elon Musk. Musk, who’s somehow convinced himself that he can now lecture the world on political and social issues, has been at the forefront of spreading false narratives about USAID. Whether it’s claiming that USAID is spending taxpayer dollars to fund “woke” initiatives or that the agency is essentially a front for some liberal agenda, Musk’s take on USAID’s work is the equivalent of trying to read a novel backwards while wearing a blindfold. USAID has been in the business of saving lives, whether that’s through disaster relief, combating disease, or providing humanitarian aid to people caught in the crossfire of civil wars. Yet somehow, Musk and his followers think it’s a waste of money because it doesn’t line up with their skewed worldview.

Let’s get one thing straight: the MAGA obsession with gender issues is nothing more than a distraction from the real work USAID does. Take, for instance, its efforts to clear minefields in Southeast Asia, a vital mission that has saved thousands of lives. Since the end of the Vietnam War, unexploded ordnance has been a persistent and deadly issue in countries like Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. USAID, along with other international organizations, has been working tirelessly to clean up these landmines. But do the MAGA crew care about that? Of course not. It’s easier to focus on the boogeyman of “gender ideology” than to acknowledge the tangible good USAID does in the world. Why? Because it doesn’t fit the narrative they want to push—one where progress is seen as a threat and not as an opportunity for global betterment.

Let’s address the broader issue here: the concept of “government waste.” Sure, there’s waste in every government program, just like there’s waste in any massive organization. But to act like USAID is some sort of bureaucratic black hole for taxpayer dollars is intellectually dishonest at best. The reality is, government waste has existed since the days of George Washington. Donald Trump has been involved in government waste more than most in recent memory, as the billions spent on a useless wall stands testament. But the MAGA solution? Throw the baby out with the bathwater, dismantle everything, and pretend like slashing programs that save lives somehow makes America “great again.”

If you want to cut waste, you need to reform—not obliterate. Trump and Musk’s reckless cuts are doing the opposite of reforming; they’re leaving entire sectors of government hollowed out, and the real losers are American workers and the rest of the world that depends on U.S. aid.

Consider this: Under the Trump administration, jobs were slashed, including critical roles at the Department of Energy, where technicians at nuclear power plants were laid off only to be asked to return when the mistake was realized. Let’s all take a moment to think about what that says about leadership—or the lack thereof. This is a prime example of how under these so-called leaders, cuts are made without any forethought, without regard for the consequences, and certainly without any understanding of the long-term impact. They’re acting like children with scissors, hacking away at anything in sight without any consideration of how those cuts might affect real lives. And it’s not just nuclear power; it’s education, healthcare, and foreign aid that are all being jeopardized for a quick, ideological win.

The MAGA regime has been hell-bent on destroying American institutions that have been built up over centuries, systematically dismantling any form of governance that might serve the common good. Their policies serve the wealthy, the powerful, and the few while leaving the majority of Americans—and the rest of the world—screwed. The fact that they’re actively undermining organizations like USAID, which has provided vital services to millions, speaks volumes about their priorities. They’re not trying to fix problems. They’re trying to destroy the very systems that make this country function, all in the name of greed, nationalism, and a fear of change.

What’s worse is the utter disregard for accountability. Trump and Musk are so determined to push through these cuts and changes without proper oversight that they might as well be playing a game of Russian roulette with the lives of the people they’re supposed to serve. The real tragedy is that this behavior is normalized, and those who challenge it are often silenced or ignored.

What’s happening with USAID, and with the broader cuts to government programs, is a far cry from what America has traditionally stood for. We’ve always been a country of progress, of helping others, and of striving to be a force for good in the world. But under the current regime, all of that is being torn down in favor of short-term political gain and an insular worldview that has nothing to offer the broader global community.

If we want to return to a country that’s a force for good, we need to reject the lies, the distractions, and the utter incompetence that’s being pushed by people like Trump and Musk. The time for throwing up our hands and accepting the destruction of vital institutions is over.

The world, and America, deserves better.
